Cry Baby
'Cry Baby' is the opening track of Melanie Martinez's debut studio album of the same name. The album tells the story of 'Cry Baby', a fantasy character portrayed by Melanie, and her dysfunctional family. It explores various themes: mental health, body image, addiction, infidelity, toxic relationships, and self love. The visual aspect of the album, made up of eleven music videos, is well worth a watch. My other favourite tracks from the album are 'Pity Party', 'Soap' and 'Mad Hatter'.
Melanie's character is seen wearing pastel shades (pink, purple and blue) for the majority of the videos but switches to darker outfits for some of the more sombre ones. Such as when she finds her Father and his Mistress dead, after being stabbed by her Mother in a drunk rage, who then drugs her to make her forget. This pink skirt is very similar to the one she wears at a Carnival where she falls for a boy before realising he's toxic for her. She sports various wigs throughout her story usually split into two different colours, a darker shade and a lighter one, and by the end of the narrative her style has evolved to symbolise her growing up. But the key elements remain the same: pastel colours, big skirts or flowing dresses, frilly socks and bows in her hair. Her child-like style in the early music videos is easy to duplicate using clothes you may already own. You can shop this outfit here.
The next outfit I have to share is inspired by 'Off To The Races' by Lana Del Rey. It will be live in a couple of days.
